CHERRY VALLEY — Erosion along the banks of the Kishwaukee River threatens to consume a recreation path in Baumann Park, village officials say.
Officials plan to undertake an estimated $110,000 project this summer to reinforce the banks and prevent the river from encroaching any farther, said Joe Caveny, the director of public works.
Roughly 10 to 15 feet of riverbank has eroded along the 300-plus-foot stretch of land that needs work.
“If we do nothing, ultimately the river will reclaim the bike path and continue to head toward the parking lot,” Caveny said. The village “will put in sheet piling to reclaim the portion that has been washed away to protect it from further scouring.”
The money will come from the village’s parks improvement budget, Caveny said. That’s a restricted fund that’s separate from the day-to-day operating expenses where officials anticipate a deficit this year of roughly $607,500.
The village has performed preliminary engineering work but still needs final plans to be drawn, Caveny said. Then the Village Board will be asked to OK the project to go out for a public bid to hire a work crew.
