PPSB To Build Permanent Breakwater At Tanjung Marina City

PENANG, June 21 (Bernama) -- Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) will build a 15- metre deep, sheet pile breakwater at Tanjung Marina City here, to reduce the effect of waves on docked yachts and boats.

Its Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said the estimated cost of the permanent breakwater is around RM4 million.

"We decided to build the breakwater following many complaints that the current nine-metre deep floating breakwater is not suitable, as it fails to stop incoming waves into the docking bay," he told reporters after a dialogue session with the Penang Port Commission (PPC) Chairman Tan Cheng Liang and Tanjung Marina City yachters and boaters here on Monday.

He said the cost of construction of the breakwater would be fully funded by the PPSB.

Construction of the project is expected to start by year-end.

"We hope, the construction of the permanent breakwater, will solve problems faced by many yachters and boaters in the area," he added.

Meawhile, Tan said she would look into the design of the country's first inner city marina, as there were many question raised over its design and location by yachters.

"I have received many complaints that the place is not suitable for a marina," she explained.

She said among the problems highlighted was the lack of a permanent breakwater, damaged docks and poor maintenance.

"We plan to visit the Marina tomorrow, together with the PPC engineers and other relevant authorities, to look at the actual condition of the RM44 million marina, located in the heart of Georgetown," she added.

Tan said at present, the marina had 108 berths and can accommodate 140 yachts and super yachts, ranging from 5m to 15m and above.
